The tool uses the safe-harbor rules for individuals filing Form 1040-ES on a calendar year. It does not work out your tax, and states have their own estimated tax rules. The math runs in your browser.
This content is general information. Tax rules change from year to year, and it is not advice for your situation. Check current IRS and state guidance and talk to a CPA before you make a decision.
Rules used
- Pay the smaller of 90% of this year's tax or 100% of last year's tax (110% if last year's AGI was over the limit above).
- Withholding counts toward the total; the rest is split into four equal installments.
- Generally no penalty if you owe less than $1,000 after withholding and credits.
